The Microbiologist will be responsible for ensuring the safety, quality, and microbiological integrity of all products produced. The ideal candidate will monitor and analyse microbiological conditions within the plant, from raw materials to the finished product, and ensure compliance with food safety regulations, industry standards, and company policies. This position plays a key role in maintaining the highest standards of product quality and safety. The Microbiologist will also be part of the HACCP Food Safety team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform microbiological sampling and testing of in-process products, and finished products to ensure they meet safety and quality standards.
- Perform microbiological sampling and testing of utilities used in production such as water and air
- Perform microbiological sampling and testing on low code items – raw materials and finished product and write reports
- Assist with Shelf-life testing and assessment for all finished products
- Conduct routine swabbing and environmental monitoring in production areas, ensuring compliance with hygiene and sanitation protocols.
- Identify and assess microbiological hazards such as pathogens, spoilage organisms, and contaminants, and recommend corrective actions.
- Work closely with production and quality control teams to address microbiological issues and improve processes.
- Review and maintain microbiological records, reports, and data to ensure compliance with internal and regulatory standards (for example HACCP)
- Assist in the development and implementation of microbiological test methods and procedures.
- Ensure proper calibration, maintenance, and cleanliness of laboratory equipment.
- Provide training and guidance to plant personnel on proper sanitation, hygiene, and microbiological practices.
- Investigate and report any microbiological failures, including root cause analysis and corrective action plans.
- Collaborate with external labs for external verification testing as per schedule
- Stay up to date on industry trends, regulations, and best practices related to food safety and microbiology.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Food Science, Biology, or related field
- At least 2-3 years of experience in a microbiology role within the food manufacturing industry
- Strong knowledge of food safety regulations (HACCP and GMP) and microbiological testing techniques.
- Experience with microbiological sampling, data analysis, and interpretation of results.
- Familiarity with laboratory equipment, such as incubators, autoclaves, microscopes, and pH meters.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to troubleshoot issues, identify problems, and propose solutions quickly and effectively.
Working Conditions:
- Occasional weekend and holiday work may be required, depending on production schedules.
