Queen Emma Chocolate Company (QEC) showcased its success at the PHAMA Plus PNG Showcase on May 7th, 2024. Karina Makori, the General Manager for Chocolate Operations, spoke at the Sector Specific Showcase on Cocoa Partner Story, highlighting QEC’s journey and its collaboration with PHAMA Plus.

Makori began her speech by expressing gratitude towards PHAMA Plus, acknowledging them as “an amazing partner” throughout their shared journey. She humbly reflected on the challenges QEC faced, despite being under the umbrella of Paradise Foods. While Paradise Foods boasted a strong presence in various sectors, chocolate manufacturing remained a relatively small category, lacking the specialized expertise required for optimal chocolate production.

Through transparency and humility, Makori admitted to the learning curve and the invaluable lessons gleaned from mistakes along the way. However, she attributed much of QEC’s progress to the unwavering support and technical guidance provided by PHAMA Plus, alongside collaborative efforts with Cocoa Board, Market Development Facility, international partners, chocolate makers, and subject matter experts.

One of the key achievements highlighted by Makori was the successful expansion into new export markets, made possible by engaging a brand ambassador in New Zealand. This strategic approach enabled QEC to establish personal connections with potential customers, understand their unique requirements, and tailor offerings to meet their needs, particularly in the craft chocolate market.

Responding to international market demands, QEC prioritized food safety and compliance, obtaining HACCP certification and aiming for FSC 22000 accreditation. PHAMA Plus support enabled QEC to acquire a new chocolate production machine, promising enhanced quality, increased capacity, and positive impacts on local farmers through expanded cocoa sourcing.
Additionally, QEC emphasized Gender Equality, Diversity, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI), integrating individuals with disabilities into the workforce and promoting inclusivity through policies and training.

In closing, Makori expressed heartfelt appreciation to the PHAMA Plus team for their unwavering support and guidance, acknowledging their pivotal role in QEC’s success. As QEC continues its journey, fueled by innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence, it stands as a beacon of inspiration within Papua New Guinea’s burgeoning chocolate industry.
With optimism for the future and a spirit of gratitude, QEC looks forward to further collaboration and continued growth, fueled by the shared vision of creating exceptional chocolate experiences while uplifting communities and celebrating the rich heritage of Papua New Guinea.
