The Heritage of Queen Emma Chocolate

Emma Coe was born in Samoa on the 26th September 1850. In 1878, she left Samoa with her partner James Farrell and arrived in the Duke of York Islands nestled between New Britain and New Ireland. It was there that they traded mainly copra with locals for beads, tobacco, knives and mirrors. In 1881, Emma bought land around the Gazelle Peninsula and with the assistance of her brother-in-law Richard Parkinson, set up large coconut plantations and also started growing cocoa. During this period she became highly successful and well respected. She was the envy of German colonists and passing traders who started to move into Kokopo around 1890. It was around this time that she became affectionately known as “Queen Emma of New Guinea.”

The Queen Emma Chocolate brand pays tribute to Emma Coe for her founding contributions towards cocoa farming in Papua New Guinea.

Much like how Queen Emma was a powerful force in her time, it is also The Queen Emma Chocolate Company goal to positively impact the lives of everyday Papua New Guineans; to bring people together through the amazing power of chocolate and create dignified relationships that empower both farmers and consumers.
